A treatment can fail long before the insecticide has a chance to work if it is applied with the wrong equipment. When comparing ULV foggers versus compression sprayers, the main difference is not simply how much product they put out. It is where the droplets go, how long they remain airborne, and whether the treatment reaches the pest harbourages that matter.
For most crawling-insect work, a compression sprayer is the practical starting point. A ULV fogger has a clear role too, particularly when a very fine mist is needed across a larger enclosed space. Neither machine is automatically better. The correct choice depends on the pest, the formulation label, the area being treated and the result you need from the application.
ULV foggers versus compression sprayers: the key difference
A ULV, or ultra-low volume, fogger uses airflow to break a liquid into extremely fine droplets. The resulting mist can stay suspended in the air and travel around an enclosed room, warehouse, void or other treatment area. This makes ULV equipment useful for space treatments and for distributing suitable products widely without soaking surfaces.
A compression sprayer is manually pumped or pressurised to deliver a more controlled spray. Its droplets are larger and heavier than a ULV fog, so they settle onto the surfaces you target. This is usually what is required for residual insecticide treatments: applying product to skirting boards, bed frames, carpet edges, cracks, crevices and other places where insects rest or travel.
Put simply, a fogger is designed to create coverage through the air. A compression sprayer is designed to place product accurately onto a surface. That distinction should drive the decision.
When a ULV fogger is the right tool
ULV foggers are commonly used by professional operators for treating larger internal areas where a fine, even mist is useful. Depending on the product label, this may include treatment for flying insects, moth activity, fleas, stored-product pests or space applications in commercial premises.
The fine droplet size means a fog can reach around furniture and into open areas that would take considerable time to cover with a conventional sprayer. In a large, cleared room, it can be an efficient way to distribute an approved insecticide formulation. It may also be useful as part of a coordinated treatment where rapid knockdown is required before a targeted residual treatment is carried out.
However, a ULV fogger should not be treated as a shortcut for preparation. Fog particles will move with air currents, but they will not reliably force their way into sealed cracks, behind tightly fitted skirting boards, beneath clutter or deep into a mattress seam. If bed bugs, cockroaches or fleas are harbouring in protected areas, the source of the infestation still needs direct attention.
ULV treatment also requires good control of the environment. Doors and windows may need to be managed according to the product instructions, ventilation systems may need to be isolated, and the room must be vacant during application and any stated re-entry period. Fish tanks, food, food-preparation surfaces, pet equipment and sensitive electrical items need proper protection before treatment begins.

Not every insecticide can be put through a ULV fogger. Some concentrates are intended only for conventional spraying, while others are specifically formulated or approved for ULV application. The label is the instruction, not a suggestion. It will state permitted application methods, dilution rate, treatment volume, PPE requirements and the pest or location for which the product is approved.
Using an unsuitable formulation can damage equipment, create an ineffective droplet pattern or leave too little active ingredient on the surfaces where pests will contact it. For trade users, keeping dedicated equipment for different product types can also reduce cross-contamination and cleaning problems.
Where compression sprayers do the better job
Compression sprayers are the workhorse of domestic and professional pest control. They give the operator direct control over where the insecticide lands, which makes them well suited to residual treatments for crawling insects.
For bed bug treatment, for example, a sprayer allows careful application to bed frames, joints, headboards, skirting-board lines, furniture edges and other label-approved harbourages. For fleas, it can be used to treat carpets, floor edges and pet resting areas after thorough vacuuming. For cockroaches, it is useful around pipe entries, cupboard voids, appliance gaps and room perimeters, provided the chosen product is approved for those locations.
A well-adjusted nozzle can produce a coarse spray that wets a surface without flooding it. This matters. Over-application is wasteful, can cause staining or run-off, and may create unnecessary exposure. Under-application leaves gaps in the treatment barrier. A compression sprayer gives you the chance to work methodically, rather than relying on airborne drift.
It is also the more sensible option for spot treatments and occupied properties where only specific areas need attention. You can treat the relevant harbourages, allow them to dry as directed and avoid putting product across an entire room unnecessarily.
Pressure and nozzle choice affect the result
A compression sprayer is only as consistent as its pressure, nozzle and operator. Pressure drops as the tank empties, which can change droplet size and output. Pump the unit as needed, maintain a steady working pace and keep the nozzle at a sensible distance from the target surface.
Nozzles should be selected for the application described on the product label. A fan pattern is often useful for broad, even surface coverage, while a more directed setting can help with cracks and edges. Check filters, seals, trigger assemblies and hoses before use. A blocked nozzle or leaking seal creates poor coverage and wastes treatment liquid.
Comparing coverage, speed and residual control
A ULV fogger covers open airspace quickly, especially in larger empty rooms and commercial environments. Its advantage is speed of dispersal, not pinpoint placement. It can be effective where the treatment label calls for a space spray, but it is usually not the best route to long-lasting control on concealed insect harbourages.
A compression sprayer is slower when treating a large volume of space, yet it provides much better control over residual coverage. The insecticide is deliberately deposited where insects will cross treated surfaces. For recurring crawling-insect issues, that precise placement is often more valuable than treating every cubic metre of a room.
There is also a practical difference in preparation and clean-up. Fogging demands more extensive room preparation because fine droplets can settle widely. Compression spraying can be contained to selected surfaces, although food areas, toys, bedding, aquariums and pets still need the precautions stated on the label.
Choosing equipment for common pest problems
For bed bugs, a compression sprayer is normally the core application tool, alongside physical removal, vacuuming, laundering and careful inspection. A ULV fogger may have a place in a professional programme when paired with an approved product, but it cannot replace detailed treatment of bed frames, furniture joints and harbourage points.
For fleas, fogging can help distribute a suitable treatment through an emptied room, but it should be supported by carpet-edge and resting-area treatment where the label permits. Vacuuming before treatment and repeating control measures in line with the flea life cycle are often essential.
For cockroaches, a sprayer offers better targeting around harbourages, though gels, monitoring traps and proofing frequently form an equally important part of the job. Fogging alone can drive cockroaches deeper into voids without removing the reasons they are present, such as food debris, water leaks and accessible cracks.
For flying insects in larger enclosed spaces, a ULV fogger may be more appropriate where a product is labelled for that use. Even then, address the source: open doors, waste storage, drains, breeding sites or damaged fly screens can quickly undermine a treatment.
Safety, compliance and good application practice
Both machines apply pesticides, so the same basic discipline applies. Read the insecticide label and equipment instructions before mixing anything. Wear the stated PPE, measure accurately, keep people and animals out of the treatment area, and observe drying and re-entry times.
Do not apply insecticide to surfaces that come into direct contact with food unless the label expressly allows it. Avoid electrical sockets and exposed electrical equipment. Never use more product simply because an infestation looks severe. Better results usually come from correct preparation, accurate application and follow-up inspection.

It helps with repeat visits, supports site procedures and makes it easier to identify whether the problem is ongoing activity or a failure to remove the underlying cause.
