When disturbed, dried material can break into dust that is easy to breathe in and difficult to remove from insulation, timber and stored items. Knowing how to clean guano safely means controlling that dust first, then dealing with the source so the problem does not simply return.

Guano is the term commonly used for bird or bat droppings. Both can create hygiene, odour and slip hazards, while larger accumulations can damage finishes, block gutters and attract insects. The right approach depends on the quantity, location and whether bats are involved.

Why guano needs careful handling

The main risk during removal is not necessarily contact with a fresh dropping. It is the dust created by brushing, sweeping, scraping or using an ordinary vacuum cleaner on dry material. Droppings can contain bacteria, fungi and parasites, and bird nesting debris may also contain mites. Contamination is more likely where there is a long-standing build-up in an enclosed space with poor ventilation.

Do not treat every small amount of guano as an emergency. A light, localised deposit outdoors can normally be dealt with using sensible protective equipment and a damp-cleaning method. Once the area is clean, remove food sources where possible and inspect the building envelope. Repair broken soffits, damaged mesh, missing tiles and gaps around services. Bird proofing must be selected for the location: netting may suit larger open areas, while spikes, wire systems or physical barriers can be more appropriate for ledges and signs.

Any proofing should be installed only after checking for active nests and potential bat use. Poorly fitted deterrents can trap birds, create maintenance issues and leave the original access route untouched. The most effective solution is the one that prevents roosting without causing harm or creating a new cleaning problem.

A clean surface is useful, but a dry, proofed and regularly inspected area is what keeps guano from becoming a repeat job. If the deposit is extensive, the species is uncertain or the work involves a roof void, treat it as a specialist task from the outset.
