A fly on a worktop, delivery bay door or reception counter can quickly become more than an annoyance. For food businesses, care settings, hospitality venues and production sites, it can create a hygiene concern, a customer complaint and evidence of a wider sanitation issue. This guide to commercial fly control sets out how to find the source, reduce fly pressure and use the right control equipment without relying on a single quick fix.
Commercial fly management works best as a planned programme. Electric fly killers, fly screens and traps are useful tools, but they cannot compensate for overflowing bins, damaged drains or doors left open during peak activity. The aim is to remove the breeding opportunity, block access and monitor what remains.
Start With the Fly and the Site
Not every flying insect needs the same response. House flies are usually linked to waste, food debris, animal matter and dirty refuse areas. Blow flies are often larger and may indicate decaying organic material, dead rodents or poorly managed external bins. Fruit flies tend to gather around overripe produce, recycling, bar areas and sticky residues in drains. Drain flies commonly point to organic build-up inside drains, gullies or wet cleaning areas.
This matters because a trap may reduce visible adults while the breeding source continues unchecked. A sudden increase in blow flies around a warehouse, for example, calls for a search of the building perimeter, roof voids, plant rooms and any rodent control points. Exclusion is the next practical layer. Keep doors closed where operations allow, repair worn brush strips and seals, and fit suitable fly screens to frequently opened windows. For loading areas, consider the reality of the operation. A screen that prevents pallets moving freely will be bypassed, so it is better to select a measure that staff can use consistently than an ideal solution that is ignored.
Choosing Commercial Fly Control Equipment
The right equipment depends on the premises, the fly species and the risk level. A restaurant kitchen, a farm packing area and a warehouse office may all use an electric fly killer, but the position and specification should not be the same.
Electric Fly Killers and Insect Light Traps
Electric fly killers, often called insect light traps, attract certain flying insects with ultraviolet light and retain them on a glueboard. They are widely used because they offer visible monitoring as well as control. Glueboard units are generally preferred in sensitive environments because insects are contained rather than scattered.
Positioning is critical. Install units where flies travel or rest, not simply where a socket is convenient. They should usually be away from open food, food preparation surfaces and direct competition from daylight. Do not place a unit directly above a doorway in the hope of stopping insects at the entrance. It can draw flies further into the building.

Air curtains are not universal solutions: their performance depends on correct sizing, mounting height, airflow direction and whether the doorway is sheltered from crosswinds.
Where a door must remain open, reduce nearby attractants. Keep waste, returns and food spillages away from the opening, and avoid locating external bins immediately beside it.
Traps and Species-Specific Treatments
Baited fly traps can help reduce pressure outdoors, especially around refuse areas, farms and loading bays. They should be placed away from customer entrances and open doors, as a poorly positioned lure trap can bring more flies towards the building. Check and service them before they become overfull or unpleasant to handle.
For fruit flies and drain flies, the main treatment is source removal. Monitoring traps can show whether activity is falling, but they are not a substitute for cleaning drains, removing residue and improving stock rotation. Insecticide use may have a place in a targeted professional programme, but it should follow identification, hygiene work and label directions. Spraying a general area without locating the source rarely provides lasting control.
Build Fly Control Into Daily Operations
A commercial fly programme fails when it is treated as a maintenance visit rather than part of site routine. Give staff clear responsibility for bin checks, door discipline, spill response and reporting sightings. These jobs do not need to be complicated, but they need to happen consistently.
For higher-risk premises, set inspection intervals that reflect the season and activity. Food handling areas may need more frequent checks during warmer months or periods of high production. Warehouses may need attention around loading bays and welfare areas. Farms and animal-related businesses should plan for naturally higher external pressure and focus on preventing flies reaching sensitive internal spaces.
Review the evidence each time equipment is serviced. If a glueboard repeatedly catches flies in one location, investigate the nearby conditions. If catches reduce after drain cleaning, keep that cleaning frequency in place. If they rise after a change in waste contractor or delivery schedule, adapt the programme rather than assuming the trap has failed.
When to Escalate the Problem
A few flies can occur even on well-managed premises, particularly in warm weather. Persistent activity, repeated customer complaints, larvae, breeding evidence or catches across several areas need a more thorough response. This may involve inspecting voids, drains, external grounds and neighbouring sources, as well as reviewing cleaning and proofing standards.
Food businesses should also consider their own hazard controls and audit requirements. Keep records of inspections, corrective actions, trap servicing and product use. If insecticides are used, ensure the product is suitable for the area, applied in line with its label and kept away from food, food-contact surfaces and non-target areas.
